A celebration of historic preservation will give visitors a rare opportunity to travel back in time and immerse themselves in the history and culture of the Columbia Plateau’s native people during the 2nd annual Spokane Archaeology Day.

This interactive event will feature something for everyone – including demonstrations, exhibits and Native American storytelling from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, on the grounds of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC).

People of all ages are invited to experience the methods archaeologists use to learn about the heritage of Inland Northwest. Among the activities, visitors will be able to conduct an archaeological survey and a mock excavation; learn how to identify historic artifacts; make tools through flint knapping; and practice zooarchaeology by studying animal bones.

Spokane Archaeology Day is sponsored by the following organizations:

  • Association for Washington Archaeology (AWA)
  • EWU Archaeological and Historical Services
  • Bureau of Land Management, Spokane District
  • Colville National Forest
  • U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
  • Kalispel Tribe of Indians
  • Colville Confederated Tribes
  • Spokane Tribe of Indians
  • Yakima Nation
  • Historical Research Associates
  • Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture (MAC)

Archaeology Day is free and open to the public.
