Link Learning and Work, Building Education-Employment Pathways that Enable Equitable Economic Mobility

Eastern Washington University (EWU) is at the forefront of this transformation. Join Christi Harter, Ph.D., Sue Magyar, Ed.D. and Kayleen Islam-Zwart, Ph.D., alongside partners from SkillsFWD, Ithaka S+R, and the Machinists Institute, as they present groundbreaking work across four key areas:

  • Faculty-Led Innovation | EWU faculty are driving reform in credit for prior learning (CPL), creating structured pathways from workforce credentials to academic degrees. Their work empowers adult learners to translate experience into advancement.
  • University-to-Business Engagement | Through partnerships with the Machinists Institute, EWU is co-creating technical and managerial degree tracks for journey-level machinists—bridging education and employment with real-world relevance.
  • Applied Focus | As part of the credit mobility efforts with Ithaka S+R, EWU is piloting flexible, accessible programs and digital credentialing tools to support working adults, immigrants, and those with some-college-no-credential. These strategies are designed to scale impact and overcome adoption barriers.
  • State of the LER Ecosystem | In collaboration with SkillsFWD, EWU is mapping the national LER landscape to identify gaps and opportunities—informing funders and stakeholders on how to maximize investments in skills-based hiring.
