Meet the Provost

EWU Provost Jonathan Anderson holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Seattle Pacific University and is a licensed psychologist in Washington State, specializing in neuropsychology and traumatic brain disorders. Since joining the Eastern faculty in 2006, he has taken on several administrative roles, first as chair of the Department of Psychology, where he provided oversight for multiple undergraduate and graduate programs, including two with external programmatic accreditation. He subsequently served as associate dean of the former College of Social Sciences from 2014 through 2016, and from 2017 through 2021 he served as dean of that college initially, then both the College of Social Sciences and the College of Business and finally the newly combined College of Professional Programs, earning the respect of faculty and staff during this period for his highly capable and fair leadership style. He is the recipient of multiple outstanding faculty awards in research, teaching and service, including Professor of the Year in 2012, the President’s Award in 2012 and the Dean’s Outstanding Service Award in 2013.

Provost’s Responsibilities

The provost is Eastern Washington University’s chief academic officer, reporting directly to the president of the university. The provost oversees the division of Academic Affairs, including graduate and undergraduate academic programs and academic support programs. The provost oversees budget allocations, planning, development, and improvement of all academic programs. While the president and provost confer regularly in setting overall academic priorities, the president focuses more attention on external constituencies. The provost attends to the day-to-day functioning of the university. The provost is responsible for implementing the university’s strategic plan and ensures EWU’s responsiveness to cultural, economic, societal and governmental changes that affect the university.

The provost meets with the deans of the colleges regularly to discuss academic policies and priorities and addresses the needs of the colleges and campus as a whole.

Students & Faculty

The provost sets guidelines and requirements with regard to admissions and financial aid working to ensure student retention and timely graduation. In regard to curriculum and education, the provost works with the deans, associate deans, department chairs, and faculty. The provost works closely with the Faculty Organization and Academic Senate in the spirit of shared governance.

Washington Campus for the Public Good President’s 2025 Student Civic Leadership Awards

As a member of Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good, EWU has the opportunity to recognize and award two of our outstanding student civic leaders. This award recognizes students that are addressing critical issues on their campuses and in their communities through service and social entrepreneurship.

Award recipients will receive the following:

  • A letter and certificate acknowledging their leadership and receipt of the award
  • Invitation to the awards ceremony held in Seattle, Washington (March 2025) including networking opportunities with other students
  • Automatic consideration and eligibility for the Governor’s Student Civic Leader Award (including a financial award)

Students are nominated by faculty, staff, administrators, community partners, or can self-nominate for consideration by their institution’s president. Both graduate and undergraduate students are eligible for nomination.

Student Nominee Criteria

  • Currently enrolled in a Washington Campus Coalition for the Public Good institution as a graduate or undergraduate student (they can be graduating before the ceremony)
  • Demonstrates civic engagement and leadership through social entrepreneurship, service, advocacy, campus clubs/organizations, volunteering, and/or work-study positions
