Those who choose to contract with ROTC gain access to exclusive benefits and a pathway to commission as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Alumni-Supported Scholarships

Sponsored by the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity (Zeta Nu chapter) at EWU, this scholarship honors First Lieutenant Randy Turner, an EWU ROTC graduate and Silver Star recipient who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1969. Established in 2018 by his fraternity brothers, the scholarship provides one year of tuition to selected EWU ROTC Cadets. Awards began in the 2019-2020 academic year.

Criteria for the Randy Van Turner ROTC Scholarship

  1. ROTC student
  2. Preference for students enrolled in simultaneous membership programs (National Guard or Reserves)
  3. Demonstrated financial need
  4. Minimum GPA of 2.5
  5. Sophomore standing or higher
  6. Preference given to students majoring in a STEM or Health Sciences program

Cadets that meet the above criteria then participate in a board held by the EWU ROTC Cadre and a university representative to determine who will receive a scholarship.  Cadets’ grades, physical fitness, leadership potential, and ability to answer questions are all considered by the board when selecting Randy Van Turner ROTC Scholarship recipients. Anyone interested in this scholarship should contact the ROTC office for more information.

This new scholarship, made possible by a generous donation from an anonymous donor, supports top students training to become service leaders in the ROTC Fighting Eagles Battalion. Recipients are selected based on need, merit, and potential.

Frequently Asked Questions

The National ROTC Scholarship is a four-year scholarship meant for high school seniors without college credit. A campus-based ROTC scholarship can be one, two, or three years in length and meant for current college students (to include transfer students and Running Start participants after graduating from high school). An SAT/ACT score is not required for campus-based ROTC scholarships. The benefit amounts for the National ROTC Scholarship and campus-based scholarships are the same. Contact our Enrollment Officer (rotc@ewu.edu) for more details and determine which scholarship process is right for you.

Correct, the scholarship would cover Tuition OR Room & Board. Some applicants receive a four-year scholarship, but most applicants receive a three-year scholarship that offer the following benefits:

  • Full-tuition scholarship or $12,000 for Room & Board annually, $400 per term for books, and $420 stipend per month
  • Students who opt for the R&B scholarship are eligible for Financial Aid toward tuition based on eligibility

Alternative: If you are concerned about paying for school and making ends meet while in school, then consider the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP). This is a highly effective way to pay for four or more years here at EWU and receive a monthly income of up to $1,350 per month (mostly tax-free). Inquire with our Enrollment Officer (rotc@ewu.edu) for more details about SMP to see if this is the right option for you.

If you are participating in Running Start through EWU, you can participate in ROTC classes without obligation to the military. Talk to your EWU Running Start advisor about signing up for Military Science (MLSC) classes that fit your schedule. All Running Start students (EWU or anywhere else in Washington) can apply for a two- or three-year scholarship that begins the fall quarter after graduating from high school. Contact our Enrollment Officer (rotc@ewu.edu) and let them know you are a Running Start student and your current academic status (college freshman or sophomore). You will apply through our Enrollment Officer directly for a campus-based scholarship.

We have two-to-three-year campus-based scholarships for qualified students transferring from another university or a community college. You will work directly with our Enrollment Officer to apply for a campus-based scholarship.

There are many variables that influence this process. More often than not, the deadlines are Spring/Summer, and the student will be notified as soon as the scholarship is approved- usually that Summer.
