Orchestral Sessions
“Waltzing Matilda” with EWU Orchestra’s faculty/grad student quartet. This fantastic group of musicians has a lot of fun working and playing together on a matched set of instruments made by an alum of EWU, Lynn Nelson.

Vivaldi’s ‘Autumn’ Concerto
The EWU Orchestra has remained busy and active during the COVID-19 pandemic. While limited to only string players this year, the orchestra is planning on learning and recording all four of Antonio Vivaldi’s The Seasons concertos. This fall they recorded the “Autumn” concerto with Julia Salerno, PhD, a professor of violin and viola at Eastern. During the winter quarter they will record the “Winter” concerto with Spokane Symphony Concertmaster Mateusz Wolski. During the spring quarter they will record the “Spring” concerto with Spokane Symphony Principal 2nd Violinist Amanda Howard-Phillips.

Dr. John Marshall: Cello Shoulder Rotation Exercise
In his forthcoming book on cello methods, John Marshall, professor of cello and director of orchestra at EWU, explains how coordination exercises can, among other benefits, help the shoulders of players “talk to each other.” When one of our shoulders goes back, he explains, the other comes forward (and vice versa). “It’s very important that we incorporate this into our cello playing.” For this mini master class, Marshall uses video shot from three different perspectives to demonstrate how players can best keep their shoulders in conversation. It’s the kind of hands-on, expert instruction that you, too, can expect to encounter at Eastern.
Take the Next Step
The EWU Music Program will award $150,000 in scholarships this year to help make the dream of becoming a professional musician a reality for students across our region.
