Malcolm PellesThe Department of Fine and Performing Arts is pleased to announce that Malcolm Pelles, Lecturer in Film and Screenwriting, has been elected to serve as Equity Chair at Washington Filmworks. Pelles and fellow Equity Chair Myron Partman will collaborate with the Washington Filmworks board, staff, and partners at Epiphanies of Equity to develop social and racial equity goals that build an inclusive and sustainable motion picture industry in Washington State.

Professor Pelles began at Eastern in 2018. His plays have been performed Off-Broadway in New York City and in Washington, DC at places like the Kennedy Center. Malcolm has written scripts for CBS Entertainment, the National Football League, Gameloft, and the US Army.  He has an MFA degree in dramatic writing from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts and an undergraduate degree in film production from Florida State University.

Eastern Washington University is once again a proud presenting sponsor of The Spokane International Film Festival (SpIFF), which will return for its 21st year beginning Friday, Feb. 1, at multiple venues around Spokane!

An opportunity for film lovers to reflect on some of the greatest films from the past year, SpIFF 2019 will begin with its annual Best of the Northwest at 5:30 p.m. at the Bing Crosby Theater, featuring a variety of short and mid-length films created in the Pacific Northwest.

Following the first showing of films will be an Opening Party, beginning at 9:30 p.m. at the Montvale Event Center.

A week-long event, SpIFF will feature 22 screenings, ranging from family-friendly animation to national and regional documentaries. Sponsored by EWU, Enormous: The Gorge Story will tell the history of The Gorge Amphitheatre and its process of becoming one of the world’s most iconic music venues.

Eastern Washington University proudly supports opportunities for educational advancement within the community. As a presenting sponsor, EWU continues to serve as a center of support for arts and culture in the Inland Northwest.

SpIFF 2019 will conclude Friday, Feb. 8, with a screening of the film Jupiter’s Moon.

Every year seven students are chosen by each of CALE’s seven departments as the recipients of the Frances B. Huston Medallion. The Frances B.
