Matthew Spaur bio feature

While an MFA student at EWU, Matthew Spaur served as fiction editor for Willow Springs and was nominated for the AWP Intro Awards.

After graduating in 1998, he was the co-owner and publisher of Spokane’s The Local Planet Weekly, a nationally recognized weekly newspaper. In his memoir Making a Small Fortune, he writes about launching the newspaper while caring for two family members with the rare disease of porphyria. In 2023, he discussed his memoir as a panelist during the 25th annual Get Lit! Festival.

His work has appeared in South Dakota ReviewOwen Wister ReviewWisconsin ReviewWillow SpringsHeliotropeInto the Ruins, and The Seattle Times, and in the anthologies Microsoft in the Mirror and Secrets. As a ghost writer for executives, his work has appeared in FORTUNE and numerous nerdy trade publications.

Spaur and his teams have won awards and nominations from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Society for Technical Communications.

He continues to write and is currently seeking an agent for a speculative fiction novel.

He’s also a narrator of multiple audio books available through Audible.

In addition to his MFA, he holds an MBA from the University of Nevada-Reno.
