“Beyond the Fence

Ancient men and women tucked inside their secret homes hint at things gone and to come. The snake appears every few years, maybe more frequently now. Lightning speaks. Whatever I try to hide will find its way out. However far I reach inward, there will always be the unknown buried there from the beginning, a star, a seed, a night hallucination.

The selected paintings and prose are abstractions of dreams I’ve had from childhood on. I’ve arranged them to coincide with the seasons, the turning of the Earth, and the cycle of a life. Over many years of dreaming, certain characters, events, and places return. This is one cycle.”

The Prom

Four eccentric Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So, when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town prom, they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue…and themselves.

The town’s parents want to keep the high school dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny.

On a mission to transform lives, Broadway’s brassiest join forces with a courageous girl and the town’s citizens and the result is love that brings them all together.

Winner of the Drama Desk Award for Best Musical, THE PROM expertly captures all the humor and heart of a classic musical comedy with a message that resonates with audiences now more than ever.

Julius Caesar

Shakespeare’s epic tragedy, Julius Caesar tells the story of the conspiracy to assassinate Caesar, and the civil war that followed. In Julius Caesar, bloody and brutal decisions are weighed against honor and ambition. Our production is a modern reimagining of the famous tale of power, loyalty and the consequences of betrayal. It’s a 400-year-old play, that feels as contemporary as today’s headlines.

The role of Julius Caesar will be played by EWU Theatre professor, Sara Goff.

In celebration of our college graduates, we reached out to our seniors for a little highlight and feedback from their time at Eastern. Congratulations on getting your degree! And welcome to the Eagle Alumni Family! Go Eags!

What is your major and minor/certificate and what made you choose that major/minor?

Hi there, my name is Timothy Senchenko and I love people 🙂 I chose to graduate with a Bachelor of the Arts in Music Technology and Entrepreneurship because I love to help people tell stories through sound! As a child I was fascinated by the inner workings of the ear and the magical feeling music gives us, so I set out to find out the truth behind all those mysteries. I was blown away by everything that I was able to learn at EWU.

What’s one class that wasn’t in your major that you’d recommend?

Personally, one of the most impactful courses that I attended, unrelated to my degree, was Sociology. The information I learned from the course allows me to have meaningful conversations with people and helps me understand everyone’s perspective by viewing life through multiple senses and emotions.

What is your plan after graduation?

I have been steady grinding using the skills and knowledge I absorbed while at EWU. I started a company called Galactic Noize which specializes in creating immersive spatial audio and music for video games and films. I have also been offering DJ/MC services as of recently.

Which faculty member in your program did you connect with the most and why?

I spent a lot of time around Dr. Middleton and Dr. Trail (during his vocation at EWU). The two of them spent hours imparting wisdom to me, with the hopes that I would retain what mattered and succeed. Both of them are very intelligent yet humble humans who only want to see the next generation thrive. I think and pray for them everyday because of their relentless and selfless attitudes toward their positions.

What was your favorite place to eat on campus or in Cheney?

I was at EWU when the old PUB was still around and I gotta say, it was worth the wait to experience the new building. With the modern glass front and the sleek edges all around, the PUB was just inspiring to be inside let alone all of the amenities and resources offered with tuition. By far the coolest cafeteria and hangout spot across all universities in the PNW. No cap.

Kathryn Amadahl

What is your major and minor/certificate and what made you choose that major/minor?

My name is Kathryn Amdahl and my degree will be a Bachelors of Music in Piano Performance with a minor in Aquatics Management. I chose my degree path due to encouragement from my high school piano teacher; she saw something in me as a musician post-high school and encouraged me to run with it and I did! I chose my minor because I love to swim for fun/exercise and want others to be able to have fun and safely enjoy time in pools.

What’s one class that wasn’t in your major that you’d recommend?

One class that was not in my major that I would recommend to others are any of the physical education dance classes like latin, swing, or ballroom dance. Those have been so enjoyable and such a fun stress reliever.

What is your plan after graduation?

My plan after graduating from EWU is to pursue a Masters in Collaborative Piano at Central Washington University in the fall. I am so excited for that opportunity and for the doors that will hopefully open!

Which faculty member in your program did you connect with the most and why?

The faculty member that I connected with the most was Dr. Jody Graves (she is in my picture). Not only has Dr. Graves been my primary piano professor, but she has been a friend, mentor, encourager, and inspiration. I am the pianist and musician I am today due to her teaching; my time with her means the world to me and she is who I will miss most when I graduate next week.

What was your favorite place to eat on campus or in Cheney?

When I actually had time to eat (sometimes musicians don’t get the time to eat, haha), I loved going to West Plains Roasters. Not only is their coffee the best on the planet, but their pastries and toast always were amazing. Highly recommend their poptarts and avocado toast!

Claire Nelson

What is your major and minor/certificate and what made you choose that major/minor?

My degree is a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance.

What’s one class that wasn’t in your major that you’d recommend?

A class outside my major I highly recommend is the education class, Diversity and Inclusion in Education. It gave me a fantastic perspective on the role of public education in our world and as it pertains to my future pursuits.

What is your plan after graduation?

After graduation I will be working with my band to record the literature I am playing for my senior recital and hopefully release that as an album, as well as continue to teach my private studio lesson students and play professionally in and around Spokane while working towards pursuing a masters in music or in music education.

Which faculty member in your program did you connect with the most and why?

The professor I connected with most in my time at Eastern is Professor Andy Plamondon, he was my improvisation professor as well as the director of many of my ensembles. Professor Plamondon is an outstanding educator and performer, and his guidance and unconditional support are definitely the reason I was able to succeed in my artistic pursuits while attending school here and I will treasure all of the knowledge he passed on to me in our time together.

What was your favorite place to eat on campus or in Cheney?

Throughout my time in Cheney I’ve become something of a regular at Barrelhouse, but I also love Arturo’s!
