Virtual Options to Connect

Handshake.

For several years, we’ve used this platform to share events, internships, and on/off campus jobs with students. They’re quite accustomed to starting their search here, so it’s your best and easiest way of broadly advertising opportunities.

This may seem daunting to anyone new to virtual offerings, but it’s really not that scary. As long as you have a webcam, microphone, and solid internet connection, you can do just about anything.

Much like an in-person event, you simply have to set the time and date, provide a good description of what you’re offering, and then provide details for students to join you. In this case, that would be a link to join your virtual event.

Not sure how to promote your event? We can help with that!

By listing your event here, you can share what you’re doing with students across multiple campuses with just one post. This is good for events such as Q&A sessions, info sessions, and employee panels.

Let our team know you’re posting an event and we may be able to do some additional advertisement for you!

Even if you’re not actively recruiting, partnering with the Career Center to offer students professional development opportunities is a great way to keep your organization connected to campus AND it helps prepare students for future opportunities.

Many faculty and student clubs have already expressed interest in letting employers virtually visit their classes or club meetings as guest speakers.

Of course, opportunities for this type of engagement are limited and we will have to process these requests on a case-by-case basis, but our team is ready to help facilitate those conversations.

In addition to our regular offerings/events (posted in Handshake), here is a menu of virtual options and ideas. If you or your team have any ideas, suggestions, or questions, you can always reach our team at careers@ewu.edu.

Recruiting Best Practices

For more successful recruitment, keep the following in mind.

  • Familiarize yourself with NACE’s Principles for Professional Practice
  • Make sure your job description is clear, thorough, and straightforward. Students are savvy, and want to see lots of details.
  • For those looking to establish a long-term, on-campus brand, remember that repetition is key!
  • Try not to compare recent graduates to seasoned professionals,  their experience levels are apples and oranges
  • Think outside the box – postings and job fairs are popular options, but they are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to campus engagement.

Recruiting Policies

Registration on Handshake does not automatically enable employers to use EWU Career Center resources. Career Center staff members verify all employer connections, and may use their professional discretion to limit recruiting activities for employers when information of concern is found during their research.

  • Adhere to EWU’s Employer Recruiting Policies and honor scheduling arrangements and recruitment commitments.
  • Supply accurate information regarding employment opportunities and compensation packages. If the organization needs to revoke its commitment, the organization must pursue a course of action that is fair and equitable to the affected candidate.
  • Follow Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and Affirmative Action principles during recruitment activities.
  • Provide statistical information about their organization and the position, including but not limited to name, contact information, location, compensation, duties, and qualifications.
  • Verify their service to the organization under consideration and provide a business license number or non-profit status verification.

  • Engage in illegal activities as judged by a court of law in the United States.
  • Offer opportunities in the adult entertainment or cannabis industry, as defined by the Seattle Municipal Code.
  • Hire for positions in an affected bargaining unit in an ongoing strike.
  • Charge fees or require payment for placement services (not including application fees).
  • Offer entrepreneurial opportunities requiring an investment or franchise management by potential candidates as a condition of employment.
  • Offer positions with a piece work pay rate.
  • Seek to employ models, actors, or any other performers traditionally hired through talent-based or casting methods.
  • Promote industries that are in violation of Federal, State or Local regulations.
  • Seek to hire students to sell products/services on campus.

EWU is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Employers recruiting on campus will be expected to maintain EEO compliance and follow affirmative action principles during all recruitment activities.

In addition, as per EWU’s Human Rights policy, Eastern Washington University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, genetic information, age, marital status, families with children, honorably discharged veteran or military status  or the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. We ask that any employer partners recruiting on campus maintain the same standards.

Employers affirm compliance with these requests when participating in any campus recruitment activity, including the posting of employment opportunities.

The term “third-party” recruiters refers to but is not limited to: employment agencies, staffing services, temporary agencies, online job boards, recruiters, and contractor organizations.

Third party recruiters are required to follow guidelines set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in the Principles for Ethical Professional Practice, including:

  • Disclosure of the name of client currently represented, as well as on all marketing material.
  • Disclosure of additional information about client that allows the Career Center to verify the presented opportunities.
  • No disclosure of any student information to a client without written permission from the student.

All relevant policies can be found here.

In addition to our third-party recruitment policy, employers offering commission-based positions may post job listings with the Career Center provided they:

  • Divulge compensation plan in job/internship description (base pay, hourly, or commission), and during application process.
  • Register in Handshake under the name of their current employer/recruiting firm, and not under their client’s name.
  • Include the name of the recruitment firm, in addition to the clients name on all marketing material.
  • Disclose additional information about client that allows the Career Center to verify the presented opportunities.
  • Not disclose any student information to a client without written permission from the student.
  • Must register in Handshake under the name of their current employer/recruiting firm, and not under their client’s name.

Commission-only positions may be approved on a case-by-case basis.  Marketing Ads that fail to provide this information will be rejected

In order to better serve our students, EWU Career Center does not support the posting of temporary, non-career related postings. Examples of these postings are: short-term childcare, non-organized relocation services, and house/home-sitting. In addition to supporting students’ long-term career objectives, this policy allows EWU Career Center to further promote the safety of its students by avoiding opportunities that may place individuals in isolated and/or potentially unsafe work environments. We recommend utilizing other services such as Craigslist to promote these opportunities.

All forms of marketing on the EWU campus must receive the approval from the Career Center and the PUB Administration (located on the 2nd floor).

Because University facilities may not be used for private or commercial gain, employers seeking to hire students to market their services/products may not use EWU Career Center resources.

Employers are requested to:

  • Notify the Career Center immediately regarding any changes or cancellations to scheduled events at 509.359.6365.
  • When applicable, employers must also contact students currently scheduled for interviews. Employers canceling with less than 48 hours notice may request help from the Career Center with contacting students.
  • EWU Career Center is unable to provide a refund to employers canceling less than one week prior to any paid events.

Eastern Washington University reserves the right to restrict or prohibit employer recruitment guidelines set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

Frequently Asked Questions

You can post it on Handshake, our online job board. Visit Handshake to create your employer account and submit your posting. This option allows you to return to our job board and make changes or updates to your own posting, or post new positions.

For a list of additional recruitment ideas, visit our Hire an Eagle resource.

If you are interested in setting up any of these activities, please contact us.

It depends on the activity.

Free recruitment includes posting positions directly with EWU, holding information sessions or office hours, hosting visibility tables on campus, and on-campus interview sessions.

There are registration fees, however, for some of our larger events such as career fairs.

Also, if you’re interested in hosting an information session during lunch or evening hours, we recommend that you sponsor lunch for students.

Lastly, many of our events have optional sponsorship opportunities for employers, so if you are interested, please feel free to reach out!

There are restrictions to what jobs can and cannot be advertised on Handshake and EWU Campuses. Learn more about our Recruiting Policies to see if you meet them.

Unfortunately, the size of our student body makes it impossible for us to know the skills and qualifications of each student, so we are not able to recommend individuals

On top of that, we don’t know your office culture well, so we can’t discern what kind of person would be a good fit for your team.

Lastly, most students that we encounter want to know what they are getting into before they begin a job.  You are much more likely to have success if you participate in the recruiting process. We’ll be glad to help make it as easy on you as possible.

Thanks for thinking of our students, but that’s not quite how internships work. There are educational requirements and legal issues to consider (see the US Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs under the Fair Labor Standards Act). Bottom line: interns are not supposed to replace the work of a paid employee.

That said, we understand some requirements may not be clear when considering the context of your workplace or planned project. Please call us for questions or qualifications; we’re more than happy to walk employers through the process.

The National Organization of Colleges & Employers has also developed some great resources for employers. Don’t miss their Postion Statement on US Internships, or their 15 Best Practices for Internship Programs.

There are a number of reasons this could be happening. We will need to look into the specifics of your posting before making recommendations. Feel free to get in touch if you’d like us to dig a little deeper into your post. Some common culprits can include:

The time of year/academic quarter. There are times of the year when students are job searching less.  Holiday breaks, finals, summer term, the list goes on. There are also times when recruitment season is in full swing and it’s busier on our job board, which may create more competition for your posting.

How much (and what kind of) information is in the posting: Our students are savvy. They appreciate clear, concise, error-free descriptions that demonstrate your company’s professionalism and thoroughly describe the available opportunity. Vague information, “sales-y” language or unclear messages will deter applicants.

The type of position(s) being posted: Some types of opportunities are more popular among our students than others.

The pay of the position: Compensation depends on a number of factors, including position type, responsibilities, industry, hours/week, etc.  It is a good idea to benchmark your compensation against other similar opportunities.  Also, if you are considering an unpaid internship, it must be in full compliance with existing law.

Your desired qualifications: Students take requirements seriously. Many will  not apply if they don’t meet every single one of your specifications. To widen your pool, you may want to emphasize only what is absolutely necessary.

Sure! You can find Facts at a Glance here, which will tell you both about our students and our alumni.

If you have additional questions, not answered on this page, please contact us.
