CTE Plan One


The CTE Plan 1 is for students currently in a teacher preparation program (BAE or MIT) who want to receive their initial CTE certification.

The CTE Plan 1 is for degree seeking students currently enrolled in:

  • A business and marketing secondary teaching degree (BAE) who want to receive their certification combined with their degree.
  • Master’s in Teaching (MIT)

Courses are taken on campus and upon successful completion the teacher candidate is recommended for a Washington State Residency Teaching Certificate.

Enrolled students must apply six months prior to starting their education curriculum (one year of classes and internships)

About the Business and Marketing Education and the CTE endorsement

The Business and Marketing Education (BAE) major satisfies the CTE requirements for grades 7-12 in Washington State. In addition to completing major coursework, candidates will obtain a career and technical education (CTE) certification through OSPI. For CTE certification, BAE majors must have 2,000 hours of paid work-related experience within the last ten years.

The BAE major at EWU provides teachers with practical business and/or marketing experience and knowledge of pedagogy to effectively instruct and share professional expertise in a 7-12 secondary education classroom. This program provides a background in accounting, economics, business administration, entrepreneurship, and computer applications as well as professional education coursework and field experience.

If pursuing recommendation for teaching certification in Washington State, all coursework listed for the secondary core coursework must be completed. The following information comes from the official EWU catalog, which outlines all degree requirements and serves as the guide to earning a degree. Courses are designed to provide a well-rounded and versatile degree, covering a wide range of subject areas.

Business and Marketing Education-For students/teachers who currently possess a Washington State Teaching Certificate. The business and marketing education program, upon successful completion, results in a recommendation for the Career and Technical Education Initial CTE Certificate VCODE V078000, and fulfills the requirement for a Plan 1: University Route option. Candidates are required to provide a total of 2,000 hours of business and marketing occupational experience and complete the required WEST-B/NES testing. The Business and Marketing Education (BME) add-on satisfies the endorsement for grades 7–12.

A Senior Capstone course is a university requirement for graduation. 

Program Requirements

  1. Formal admission to the BAE program.
  2. Completion of university competencies in writing and university proficiency in math required prior to taking lower division required courses.
  3. Completion of university proficiency in writing required prior to taking upper division required courses.
  4. The above major takes more than 12 quarters at an average of 15 credits per quarter.
  5. A required Career and Technical Education (CTE) certification within Business and Marketing Education (BME) requires a minimum of 2,000 hours of paid related work experience in business.
  6. Student teaching in business and marketing is required as well as the passage of the National Evaluation Series Business and Marketing Education (NES 309) exam.
  7. Our program is aligned to the National Business Education Association (NBEA) standards.

Grade requirements for graduation: a minimum grade ≥C in each course required for the major and a minimum GPA ≥2.5.
