Interdisciplinary Science Center
Today’s inquiring minds, tomorrow’s workforce leaders.
Next Level Research
The Interdisciplinary Science Center (ISC) opened for classes in fall of 2021 as part of a larger initiative to create a “science innovation complex” on the Cheney campus.
As a top state university for graduating students in STEM disciplines, Eastern Washington University plays a crucial role in meeting an increasing demand for degrees that support careers in health-science and technology-based industries.
With a geode-inspired four-level design that boasts 27 ultra-modern teaching labs, the ISC expanded EWU’s capacity to offer cutting-edge science classes that develop advanced professional skills.
Innovation Meets Education
Flexible Learning
The ISC’s high-tech labs, flexible learning spaces and science-inspired murals and displays are designed to spark creativity and nurture a passion for science.
High-Tech
Wired to accommodate the technology of the future, the ISC also affords a high level of energy efficiency.
Collaborative Study
instrument-rich learning and interdisciplinary research opportunities that promote critical thinking, experimentation, and problem-solving
Optimized Learning
The student-friendly building is designed to optimize learning. Its’ common areas and small-group workstations spark conversations and inspire collaborations, while individual study pods help to support student success. Plus, there are plenty of charger ports to keep the energy flowing.

Building a Research Hub
The Science Building, built in 1962 and connected to the ISC via a glass-enclosed walkway, is undergoing extensive renovation to transform a “Sputnik-era” building, into a state-of-the-art research facility. The first phase of the project, which will update half of the 148,000-square-foot building, is expected to be completed in late 2023.
Bidding for construction of the second phase of the project will begin in the fall of 2023, pending full approval of the governor’s budget, which has a provision for funding Phase 2 of construction.
When fully renovated, the Science Building will become part of a “science-innovation complex”. Undergraduate students, who start out with core science classes in the ISC, can pursue upper-class research courses in the renovated Science Building.
The science hub will support next-level student-faculty research that develops skills that open doors to top careers while also helping EWU attract federal, state and private research grants.
Private Gifts Like Yours Help Usher in the Future
Eastern is leveraging government funding with private support to ensure the Science Building is fully equipped with the latest scientific instruments and technology to ensure that students and faculty can maximize their research potential. Financial gifts from donors like you will provide students with opportunities for advanced research experience so that they can develop the skills it takes to become the leaders and innovators of tomorrow.
