History students, Chelsea and McKenzie, start this school year with a little extra help from Rick and Carolyn Mattern. Their generosity to the College of Social Sciences History Department enables the department to award multiple scholarships to deserving students.
Rick (’73) attributes his career success at Boeing in large part to the liberal arts education he received at Eastern. As a result, he is giving back to the History Department to help students with their academic careers and as a small payback for all the academic and life skills he learned at EWU.
He says, “For many, extra financial assistance is a justified reward for years of hard work, self-discipline, and sacrifice. Completing this History degree successfully will help ensure students are better prepared with writing and public speaking skills, critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership models to use in the workplace.”
Chelsea, 2018-2019 Award Recipient
“This award positively impacted both my academic research as well as my personal confidence in the Masters in History program. Upon receiving this scholarship I gained confidence in my work as a student and scholar, knowing the faculty I have worked with supported and encouraged my achievements as a student.“
McKenzie, 2018-2019 Award Recipient
“Going into my senior year at Eastern, I am more than ready to finish up my education and tackle challenging classes! This scholarship will without a doubt help immensely with expenses, but more importantly, it has instilled a sense of pride within myself. I greatly appreciate the recognition and will continue to work hard at my studies not only for myself but also for those who have invested in me.”
