Eastern Washington University is saddened to report that Peggy (Cleo) Gazette passed away on Jan. 23, 2024 at the age of 100. (You can read her obituary in The Spokesman-Review online.)
Gazette, a graduate of North Central High School in Spokane, spent more than 35 years in the development and advancement of women’s physical education and athletics, mainly in the Inland Northwest. Gazette was instrumental in the development of women’s athletics at Eastern, serving for 21 years primarily as head of women’s physical education programs.
She came to Eastern in 1966 and served as women’s athletic director and director of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Graduate Program, in addition to her duties as professor. In 1982, she became a professor emeritus and served as Women’s Athletic Program faculty representative. From 1986-87, she returned as interim women’s athletic director. She also spent three years as chair of the Northwest College Women’s Sports Foundation. Gazette was inducted into the EWU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.
Gazette was a longtime supporter of EWU, creating can endowed scholarship fund to support students and belonging to two giving societies. She was also a lifetime member of the EWU Retirees Association.
