LEED Buildings

"LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices. At EWU we currently have 6 buildings that are LEED certified.

Electrical Management

The electricity we have at EWU comes largely from hydroelectric energy, as does the majority of electricity in Washington state.

U.S. Energy Information Administration

Recycling

Recycling/Waste Management manages our waste responsibly maintaining full-service recycling. Our recycling program is so well-run the profits from recycled materials go back into the department to help offset costs.

Custodial

Custodial Services strives to use the greenest products and uses reusable and recyclable products whenever possible. Paper towels on campus are recyclable, and they offer hand dryers as paper towel alternatives along center pull toilet paper, which is more sanitary and cuts down on toilet paper waste.

Catalyst Building

The Catalyst building on the Spokane campus is the core of an internationally significant eco-district, a place where the smart grid meets smart buildings. The city’s first zero energy building, this immersive and applied learning center will inspire leading-edge thinking and project creation from EWU students and faculty.

Rozell Plant

The Rozell Plant is a central building that houses the boilers and coolers that maintain the temperatures in the buildings on campus. Our boilers use natural gas to heat water and create steam. Engineers must constantly monitor and maintain the machinery at the plant. They make sure that the plant follows guidelines to monitor energy utilization.

Water and Plumbing

EWU has two wells that get water from the aquifer underground. That groundwater is pumped to the large tower where it is chlorinated for our safety. The water is routinely tested to ensure that it is safe to drink, and all of our water bottle fillers on campus have filters on them, ensuring that the water is safe to drink without the taste of chlorinated water.
